Standout track

“This Ain’t A Drinking Song” is Dwane’s clap back at county radio, which historically has almost always offered alcohol or other substances as a solution to life’s myriad problems. The rocking chorus of the song is a personal list of all the things Dwane lost “just to get high.”

Dwane’s treatment of “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” — a rootsified version of the Tears for Fears classic — features fiddle, banjo, and pedal steel, all of which feel like they were always meant to be there.

“The Devil's Working Hard” is a rave-up where Dwane blames the devil for the slew of temptations placed in his path on a daily basis and the vigilance it requires to walk the straight and narrow; sharing a spirit with Jason Isbell’s recent track “It Gets Easier.” The dueling guitar solos evoke imagery of good and evil fighting it out while a barn is on fire. The hypnotic outro repeats “When you hear the devil whispering” in listeners’ ears, featuring guest vocals from Melody Walker of Front Country.
